Through Child's Eyes (2007-2008 Across Lincoln Project)
Mixed Media; 3' x 6'
Current Location: First Plymouth Church at 20th and D streets in Lincoln, NE
Inspiration/Application Statement
Salvation and the cross are very simple concepts to a child. Faith in what is unseen and trust come easily to them as well. Matthew 19:13-15, Mark 10:13-16; and Luke 18:15-17 record Jesus taking time for children and saying, “…for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these…” It is this concept and the desire to include my three year old in this public project which led to the idea of Through Child’s Eyes. Children have a way of creating that is purely intuitive and therefore free to exploration. My son loves to paint and I love watching and learning from his raw joy of creation. Due to this and because of the above mentioned segments found in the gospels I felt only the art of a child could truly portray the concept of this piece.
The art work will be a series of crosses varying in size and materials and will be collaged to create one large 5’ x 8’ free-flowing cross. The crosses will be cut from wood, foam board, paper, canvas, child craft supplies (i.e. foam, felt, etc.) and decorated mainly by my son with paint, crayon, noodles, tissue, paper, glue, stamps, and other child friendly materials. The crosses will be adhered to a simple supportive framework which will create the above mentioned free-flowing cross. The piece will be a relief designed for display inside. The artwork will be finished with paint and or anything deemed necessary to bring it to a state of completion and then sealed to be protected.
I hope to use the time creating this piece to share my love for God and art with my three year old, and also to learn how to better create with abandon like he does. I hope the viewers of this artwork will be challenged to share their faith with their own children and examine their own faith - Is it like that of a child?
