Again the idea of path, of journey, of travel:  John’s mission was to make way for the Lord.  He came first to tell people that He was coming.  To tell the people that the Messiah was coming and that Jesus was the Lamb of God, the Holy One.  John knew his status and was humble knowing the life he was given was to be a messenger for the coming Lord.
