Stories of Value (2015 Illuminating Lincoln Project to benefit Lighthouse )
Project Location: Culler Middle School, 52nd and Vine Street, Lincoln, NE
Purchased Location:
When visiting the Lighthouse website, I was impressed to read that several of the current staff had been served by Lighthouse as teens. That helped me understand and realize the long term impact of the organization. It also inspired a design that would incorporate stories of individuals Lighthouse has served the past 25 years.
For this design, entitled Stories of Value I am proposing working with current staff to gather as many stories from Lighthouse Alumni that I can. Each story will be handwritten by the individual and then collaged on to the light bulb. Once complete, the collage will be sealed with several coats of clear coat. Then a layer of clear gesso will be added for a rough texture to paint on. In the next layer I will utilize the Lighthouse values and write those words: love, respect, diversity, education, personal responsibility, honesty, and belonging across the bulb. These words will create the grid in which I will place acrylic paint in bold analogous colors of purple, red, and orange. The colors represent empowerment, love, boldness, energy, strength, and worth that students acquire through their time at Lighthouse.
We all need someone in our lives who will help us grow in character and teach us to give back to others. My hope is that Stories of Value will be a reflection of the circle of influence Lighthouse has had the past 25 years and will have well in to the future.
