Slave Free Nebraska (2011 Slave Free Nebraska Park Bench Project)
Latex Paint
Current Location: 12th and P street, Lincoln, NE
My idea for the bench is inspired by the open spaces of Nebraska’s landscape and the free quality that open space suggests. Our state has one of the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises as it casts a warming glow across the blue sky and green fields of the plains. The colors are inspired by the nature around us especially as one drives from east to west across the state on I-80.
The front of the bench shows a landscape with clouds covering some of the rays to represent those caught in the world of human trafficking. The back of the bench shows the sunny sky void of anything that could hinder its rays, to represent freedom and hope.
The bench will have a stained glass look to it’s painting style and part of the bold black lines that outline the colors will contain the words SLAVE(on the front backrest of the bench), FREE (on the seat of the bench) and NEBRASKA (on the back of the bench).
I hope that this bench design will help to bring awareness to others which will in-turn stop the human trafficking going on in this state.
