Proverbs Tree (Wisdom Tree) (16' x 8'; Spring 2014)
Location: Lincoln Berean Church, Lincoln, NE
Created for: Summer Proverb Series at Lincoln Berean Church
As an artist and leader of artists at Lincoln Berean Church, we are sometimes asked to create unique pieces for the stage for weekend service. This project came from a creative planning meeting were a need for a tree speaking wisdom words from Proverbs would be able to encourage and challenge the congregation. The worship pastor, teaching pastor, and I selected the words to be used and then I created a series of stencils in which to lay out the words on the tree form which is made of painted insulation foam.
It took a team of people to paint the tree black, trace the words, and then paint them in three shades of green and white. The tree was then hung from the beams above the stage and lit by the lighting volunteers which help to create the atmosphere for the service.
It was one of my first real experiences of how a team working in sync with their gifts can create an amazing pieces of artwork.
The tree was used again in 2016 as we continued to walk through the book of Proverbs during the summer.
