Progression -- wrestling
P5 pieces each 12" x 18"
Acrylic paint and charcoal on paper
THE THOUGHT BEHIND THE PAINTING: The process of wrestling: to struggle with a difficulty or problem. After inviting others into the conversation of whether or not to display and exhibit of photos sharing people’s stories through images of their tattoos, I began to struggle, think, pray, and seek direction with intensity. For the first time in my life, God lead me to an powerful time of creating. One Wednesday afternoon in the middle of this wrestling, I was asked to throw out my plan for the day and focus my creativity on expressing what I was experiencing. God brought to mind circles – the shape I felt I was spinning in constantly over this issue. Then He began to bring to mind yellow – light. When struggling with a problem there is always a little light there. As we continue to process and wrestle with the issue, the light begins to grow as we seek God for wisdom and direction. As the process continues the muted, unclear areas begin to become crisper, clearer as more light and life are revealed. We come to a place of decision and although we may not have a completely clear or resolved answer we have an inkling of the way in which to go and we step forth in faith. After that decision is made we then rest. And for the moment this is where we need to be. Often when I’m here, I continue to pray that I’ve made the right choice and look for God to affirm the decision.
HOW IT RELATES TO THIS SERIES: I had this experience of the progression of wrestling as I struggled with whether or not to display the tattoo exhibit in this gallery. Although I sense what direction God had for the moment, I wasn’t completely clear much like the final painting in this series of five. As He journeyed with me through the next week, He revealed just why I had to settle on where I had landed the Friday before. He began to open new opportunities for the exhibit and took me on the adventure of creating this body of work.
HOW THE PIECE WAS MADE: Various sizes of circles were drawn on the paper and then I used five main hues to make all the tones and colors seen in the paintings. Although the first pieces are muted in color, they are made up of the turquoise, red, orange, and yellows found in the other paintings. The progression of brightness and intensity of color along with the reduction of circles in the center of the pieces represent the coming clarity while wrestling.
