Jesus knew the hearts of all those who tried to trick Him especially the teachers of the law. 
In this passage He answers a question with a question challenging them.  He often challenges us and the views we have of our world in order to teach us about Himself and who we really are deep inside. I know I’ve personally been challenged in my own selfish behavior through times when I can’t trust myself and have to look to Him to figure out how to respond in a given
situation.  He reveals that He knows my heart and it humbles me at the gentle way He challenges my view of the world around me.
