Journey of Light (2015 Illuminating Lincoln Project to benefit Lighthouse )
Project Location: Ameritas, Cotner and O Streets, Lincoln, NE
Purchased Location: Private
When I think lighthouse or a light bulb I envision bright LIGHT! I wanted to somehow incorporate actual light but since that wasn’t encouraged for this project, I began thinking on other qualities of light. Especially on how it reflects off of objects like glass. Reflective qualities of glass correlate with what happens when someone grows in character. He or she begins to mirror what they learn. If it is love, respect, and relationship, one’s life begins to shine and reaches others revealing growth. This doesn’t happen quickly and unlike a light bulb in a lamp, you can’t just flip a switch and make “good character” turn on. It takes work and time. An artist knows this idea of work and time as “the process.” We are all on a journey in this life and if one is willing, we can be teachable and open to the process of grow and change making us into better people.
Using stained glass and mirror, both etched and un-etched, I hope to portray this life journey. As one grows, not only do they add color and depth to their life, they also touch others or “shine.” There is a progression in the glass from frosted-colorless mirror; on to colored, frosted glass; and finally to reflective. As viewers encounter this piece, they will experience the “light of reflection,” the difference each person can make in their world, whether small or large, if they commit to the growth process. Whether it is through character, education, spirituality, or relationships, growth causes us to shine.
I hope viewers will be inspired to grow and continue on their own Journey of Light.
