In a Blink (7' x 10'; Summer 2015)
Location: Great Plains Health, 601 W. Leota Street, North Platte, NE
Commissioned By: Noyes Art Designs
In late 2014, I was emailed by Noyes Art Designs to share my piece, Broken and Praising with a group out of North Platte, NE. The group liked the looks of the piece and wanted to propose something like it for a new hospital. About the end of January 2015, I ran across the email from Noyes Art Designs and, in passing, wondered what became of that. Not more than two days later I received an email from Nancy Noyes (owner of Noyes Art Designs) requesting I call her. I got on the phone immediately and chatted with her about the opportunity to create two large scale mosaic sculptures for the new Great Plains Health Center, to be installed in Summer 2015. I agreed to the project and worked hard for the next two weeks to come up with two proposals, one for the Pediatric wing and this one for Labor and Delivery. After wrestling with ideas, suggestions, and thinking on my own life as a mother, I came up with "In a Blink."
Artist Statement: Being a mother of three boys, I can look back and realize how quickly the baby stage flew by. I am always amazed at how much children change in the first year of life. "In a Blink" celebrates that growth and encourages parents not to take those moments for granted. Five precious milestones are positioned on a ribbon representing time and growth. Included on the ribbon are words that challenge parents to love, cherish, and grow at they watch their little ones change and develop. The piece is somewhat tilted on the wall which represents the "off-kilter" feel of that first year for a parent. In my home we referred to it as learning a "new normal."
