"Some Bigger None Better" October 2019
Location: CVA building in Henderson, NE (located on at the cross street of Front and Elm)
Starting in the fall of 2017, I began talks with Henderson about a mural on the COOP building through a group of kids from York College. After the semester ended, there was no progress with the project so I was surprised in April 2018 when I received a call from the city that they wanted me to meet with the council about a mural. So I did and we began Phase 1 of 3. During Phase 1 I created 8 sketches and then put them in front of the council. They selected 4 of the 8 and then we moved to Phase 2 in which we placed the 4 selected sketches in front of the community during the months of July and August. The community voted on which one of the four they would like to see on the wall and the winner was "Some Bigger None Better." This sketch was inspired by a sign the once resided on the north end of town welcoming people who drove in to town from the interstate. Once the sketch was selected, the project stalled out with getting the wall tuck pointed and then it stalled further when the COOP was merger talked with Central Valley Ag. So again, I sort of figured the project was over. Then in August 2019, I received communication from the city once again and they said CVA was excited to get the mural up and they were getting the wall repaired and the timeline was quick. There was still time to get the wall repaired and three weeks later prime it and get the mural going. In a total of 6 to 7 weeks the wall was tuck pointed and mural on!
During the process of painting, I had the privilege of meeting with the students of Heartland Community Schools As the mural was on many of the students' walks home they often would holler out at me as they went by. Homecoming week was also going on while I painted and I enjoyed listening to the Junior High Marching Band practice and participate in a parade. There were some new folks I met and worked with, and some old friends and others I knew that stopped to say hello and chat. It was an amazing experience to put a mural in my hometown. To learn more and read about the process as it happened take a look at the blog posts from October 2019 (link to first blog from the project.) Also take a look at the videos to see time lapse shots of the painting process.
