Elements of the Season (2013 Nebraska City Enchanted Arboretum)
Current Location: Nebraska City, NE
When I saw the stylized tree form for An Enchanted Arboretum I knew I wanted to be involved and submit a maquette in the unique style of bright colors and bold lines in which I work. It makes a painting that results in a look which is very stained glass-like. I also use stylized images of leaves, flowers, and other natural forms in my work and knew that those would work hand in hand with the style of the tree. So I am submitting my idea for a tree that is painted with acrylic paints using stylized snowflakes, leaves, and flowers, along with colors, to represent the seasons. The inspiration for representing the seasons came from the four quadrant form of the tree and because Nebraska experiences these distinct four seasons each year. The extra lines in each section are intuitive and represent the motions of the breeze and the movement of the leaves on the trees.
I chose to utilize this style because it mimics stained glass and when I think of An Enchanted Arboretum, I think of a grove of trees made of colorful glass that shimmer and shine in the sunlight and sparkling in the rising and setting sun. I also imagine to sound of the glass leaves as they tink against each other in the breeze much like the sound of wind chimes.
I hope that as viewers experience each quadrant they will see sneak peaks of the next one and be encouraged to walk around the piece and go on a journey of the four seasons through my eyes. I also hope it will encourage viewers to take time to enjoy the distinct seasons of our state.
