Christ brought with Him love and light.  Knowing Him exposes the dark areas of the world and of our hearts.  Although for some this turns them off to Christ, it is essentially this exposure and realization of the dark that breaks our hearts and causes us to see our need for a Savior.  The Light of the world reveals our need for Him and ultimately paid the price so living in the dark isn’t necessary.  He invites us to walk with Him in the light through His work here on earth.
