Water: Life and Growth (2011-12 Yankton, South Dakota's Annual RiverWalk Project)
INSPIRATIONAL / APPLICATION STATEMENT: As our country moved west, cities sprang up near rivers which allowed them not only to survive but also to grow. In nature, the closer one gets to water, the more vegetation one encounters. It seems that where there is water this is life and growth.
This is the inspiration behind the sculpture I am proposing for the 2nd River Walk project.
Coming up out of a sea of blue mosaic glass, representing water or the source of life and growth, is a figure who extends her arms upward and produces foliage (the growth). The figure will be constructed from WinterStone which will be finished to look like bronze. This material will withstand the elements and provide a strong base for the tree leaves (foliage) which will be constructed will an enclosed armature and covered with mosaic glass just like the water. The water and foliage will be grouted and sealed to protect it from the elements.
Standing roughly 4’ - 5’ high the base and foliage will extend roughly 3’ in width and 3’ in depth, the sculpture will be fashioned in pieces and easily put together on site. This will allow for ease in transport for a piece that will total somewhere around 70-80 lbs when assembled.
I hope that viewers will take time to ponder this idea of life and growth as they view this sculpture.
