Season of Colors (2013 Nebraska City Enchanted Arboretum)
Current Location: Hospital; Nebraska City, NE
Much of my artwork is inspired by nature and the way things move, sound, and have their being. I also love color and most of my work has bold elements of color in them no matter what medium I choose to use. So this public art project seemed to be right up my alley in terms of style and materials.
When I think of An Enchanted Arboretum, I think of trees made from magical elements something a little beyond nature. I think of colors and sheen which led to the idea of this tree and my choice to use stained glass pieces as ‘tiles’ for the mosaic. As the viewer looks at each quadrant of the tree they will see color combinations that represent the seasons to me. The branches are made by leaving bigger spaces for grout than between the pieces of glass which have been adhered to the tree form using exterior tile mastic. The edges of the tree will also be grouted which will seal them and add a little bit of safety to the piece as well. When the design is complete it will them be sealed several times with a high gloss sealant which will help the glass to reflect the sunlight and cast a sheen from the ‘leaves’ or tiles on the tree.
I see each glass piece as a leaf of the tree and the colors represent all the gorgeous colors found in each season whether in the sky, leaves, flowers, precipitation, grass, fields, etc. I want viewers to get the essence of the seasons through the colors used and be taken into a world of fantasy through the materials as to me there is nothing more enchanted than a tree with glass foliage that sparkles in the sunlight.
