Christ refers to the Holy Spirit that will come upon His disciples when He leaves the world.  The painting’s analogous color scheme plays well into symbols of Christ.  The royal nature of Christ as King is represented in purple while the blood He was soon to shed – the red.  The coming Spirit is then referred to in blue.  Through these colors we can remember the price paid and the promise made to be with those who believe in Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
